Trucks that run through the Central Valley and over the Grapevine work extra hard in summer. Long climbs, heavy loads and triple-digit temperatures combine to push engines, tires and batteries to their limits. A little preparation goes a long way toward avoiding a breakdown on a hot highway shoulder.

Keep the Cooling System in Top Shape

Your cooling system works hardest in summer. Before the heat arrives:

  • Test coolant strength and top up with the correct coolant type
  • Clean bugs, dust and debris from the radiator and A/C condenser
  • Inspect hoses, clamps and the water pump for leaks
  • Make sure the fan clutch engages properly

If your temperature gauge starts climbing on a grade, ease off, watch the gauge and pull over safely if it keeps rising. Never open a hot radiator cap.

Check Tire Pressure Often

Hot pavement and heavy loads raise tire temperature and pressure. Underinflated tires flex more, build even more heat and are much more likely to blow out. Check pressures with a gauge when the tires are cold, at the start of the day, and inspect for cuts, bulges and uneven wear.

Don't Forget the Batteries

Many people think cold weather kills batteries, but heat is just as hard on them. High temperatures speed up corrosion and fluid loss inside the battery. Have your batteries load-tested, clean corrosion from the terminals and make sure all connections are tight.

Service the A/C Before You Need It

A working A/C is not just about comfort — driver fatigue and heat stress are real safety risks on long summer runs. If your A/C is blowing warm air, making noise or cycling on and off, have it checked for leaks, low refrigerant or a failing compressor.

Watch Belts, Hoses and Fluids

Rubber parts wear out faster in extreme heat. Cracked belts and soft or swollen hoses can fail without warning. Also check engine oil, transmission fluid and power steering fluid — heat breaks fluids down faster, so stay on top of your service schedule.

Summer Pre-Trip Checklist

  1. Coolant level and no visible leaks
  2. Cold tire pressures and tire condition
  3. Belts and hoses in good condition
  4. Battery terminals clean and tight
  5. A/C blowing cold
  6. Plenty of drinking water in the cab for the driver
